The autumn equinox has been and gone, or at least as a calendar date it has. If you’ve read Season Songs, then you’ll know I see the sabbats not merely as static dates to mark the arrival and passing of some celebration but rather as markers of the season, drawing our attention to the energies that abound at that time. I am not a sabbat snob and if you haven’t had chance to celebrate the equinox, don’t let anyone tell you it’s too late!

This weekend in my small slice of the world certainly felt like one of two halves. Saturday was wonderfully warm and sunny and s o I found myself in the woods. It’s a little too soon for mushrooms here but simply being out in nature on such a day is like medicine for the soul.

Sunday in comparison, was a complete washout and rained all day long! But not one to let the weather put me off, I harvested the rose hips from the garden and the last of the belladonna berries. I couldn’t be bothered to thread these though and already have plenty dried, so I squished them up strained the juice and added alcohol to preserve. I’m going to save the deep purple liquid for divination later on.

After thanking the spirits of land and place in a small and quiet solo ritual, I made the house cosy with candles and settled down for the first two episodes of Agatha All Along. I don’t know a witch who has watched it yet and doesn’t love the song!

So if you’ve yet to mark the turning of the wheel, there is still time. Go out foraging for apples and the last of the fruits or collect the last of the summer flowers and dry their petals for incense. Connect with the genius loci where you live by simply getting out and about and noticing the subtle changes as we head into the dark half of the year. Or simply enjoy the season however soothes your soul!

Blessed autumn equinox witches!
