Regular readers will know I’m something of a plant nerd. Plants are an important feature in my own witchcraft practice in so many ways. I love their folklore and stories, superstitions and old wives tales. They are vital ingredients in magical praxis and of course, as an animist, they are living things with their own spirits. So you can imagine my sheer delight when The Sensory Herbal Oracle by the very fabulous Seed Sistas turned up on my doorstep!
The Seed Sistas are something of a unicorn themselves (in the very best kind of way). They are extremely fun, magical beings, full of whimsy but all of this is backed up by their clinical herbalism backgrounds. Make no mistake, they know their stuff! All of this comes through in their beautiful cards. It is very obvious that so much thought and effort have gone into The Sensory Herbal Oracle that they are more than just an oracle deck. They have depth and layers and this is reflected in how the cards are used, providing nuanced readings and workings that go beyond the realm of a simple oracle deck.
The deck then, consists of 40 cards, 35 of which deal with plants. The other five are element cards, which I absolutely love. As someone who enjoys a dabble in Hermeticism and elemental magic more generally, the element cards are a welcome addition and a nod towards the forces that shape and build the world. This elemental theme is carried throughout the other cards. the 35 plant cards then are divided into five sets of seven, and each ‘set’ relates to a particular element. These sets of seven also relate to different parts of the plant, the roots, leaf, seed, flower and whole plant, with each of these being related to a specific element.
And of course the deck comes with it’s very own guide book, and what a little treasure trove of information it is! You wouldn’t believe how much information has been squeezed into it! Of course you have pages dedicated to individual cards and their meanings, but there are also activities to help you get to grips with the cards. There’s a handy chart that gives you all the important information at a glance.
The Sensory Herbal Oracle has become one of my favourite decks to use. As we head towards the summer solstice, these dreamy little cards are the perfect addition to any witches arsenal!
